Maitri Space Awareness—Weekend Program

The five wisdom energies, also known as the five Buddha families, when misinterpreted are the building blocks of our ego; when they are freed in their natural state are the expression of our wisdom. This weekend program will allow us to experience these energies and explore their manifestation in the elements, in our emotions and in the phenomenal world. The five wisdom teachings and practice reveal the profundity of Buddhist psychology and the transformative power of Tibetan Buddhist tantra.

An icicle melting in the bright sun, a rotting log covered in moss and home to a great variety of bugs and plants, a crocus peaking out of the snow, all are manifestations of the Buddha family energies. So are various styles of architecture and the cities of the world, the various landscapes of the earth, and the view of outer space. The five wisdom energies work directly with the basic elements of experience: body, mind, emotions and our surroundings.

In 1971, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche created a meditation practice using five postures and five colors to evoke these energies so that we could learn to befriend emotions and ultimately develop unconditional love for ourselves and others. This training, based on the teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, will include sitting meditation, posture practice, experiential work, talks and discussion. This program is open and accessible to meditation practitioners at all levels.

The Friday evening program is open to the public for a fee of $20 at the door.

About the Teacher

Chris Pleim worked with Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche beginning in 1972 and was one of his core teachers and administrators. He spent six weeks practicing and teaching at the original Maitri Space Awareness facility in 1976. Ever since, he has seen this program as a way to introduce students, at whatever level, to the wisdom of Buddhist tantra very directly and experientially.

Our Generosity Policy

In order to make our programs accessible to everyone, we have a “pay what you can afford” policy. If the program price is an obstacle for you, please decide what works for you and offer whatever you can.

For those who can offer more, we invite you to pay more to help cover the costs for others who are not able to pay the full price.
