Group Volunteering Opportunity – Making Meals for the Interfaith Homeless Shelter
Many have expressed that they would like to volunteer, but would like to do so as a group, in the company of other Shambhalians. Here is your opportunity! If everyone pitches in once-in-a-while, the time & expense will not weigh too heavily on a few. This is a fun, heart-warming opportunity, and a great way to get out and recognize the “basic goodness” of all, while bringing our vision into action in a very concrete way. The guests are so appreciative, and clearly love the opportunity to talk and share their stories. Besides, if now is not the time to engage in such activity, when would be a more appropriate time?
We will be making meals for the Interfaith Shelter for the Homeless once a month – lunch on Friday one month, followed by dinner on Sunday the next month; then back to Friday lunch, and so on. On the 3rd Friday of every-other month, we will be caravanning from the Center just after the book study group, at around 11:15; you are welcome to drop food off at the Center for someone else to take for you, if you cannot make this time. Or you can meet us at the Shelter a bit before noon. These lunches will be pot-luck style; sign up for whatever you would like to contribute. We serve lunch at Noon. Three to four serve, and everyone is invited to join the guests for the meal.
On alternate months, on Sunday afternoon, we will gather at the Shelter at around 4:30, prepare most of the meal together, and then serve at 5:30. Again, three or four serve, and everyone is invited to join the guests for a meal. Several shelter guests have expressed interest in joining our meditation sessions. This is a wonderful opportunity for outreach. And a wonderful service to offer those who are in crisis.
The Shelter asks us to cook for 30 guests, plus ourselves (around 10 seems to work best).
